Here you can see the carving, unpainted, with some of the pencil sketch still on it.

At this point I had a hard decision to make: semitransparent stains, bare wood, clear finish, or opaque paints? Note the tools in the lower-right corner: a $1 locking-blade cutter knife and an inexpensive nearly-flat gouge/chisel.
